Ok, so the funny crackling sounds, whining and squeaking accompanied by the smell of Scalextric and cooked capacitor would seem to suggest that the telly is no more, it is an ex-TV.

Question is, is 9 years old a good age for a massive plasma screen? Because that's how old it is... #dontfeelrobbed

Well that was a splattery and damp ride!

Well that was a splattery and damp ride! Good to get out no matter how cold and slithery it was. And any it was slick in places!

I just rode 9.7 miles! Check it out on #strava: http://app.strava.com/activities/41655949

Decent meal with good friends. Untold chaos caused by dietary requirements but hey, we weren't too troublesome :-)

Not very clear on a poor camera phone but that is Easter and Christmas separated by, mini eggs :-)

OK, so I can't seem to be able to get an invite to play Google's new game, #Ingress.

OK, so I can't seem to be able to get an invite to play Google's new game, #Ingress. I guess my question is, am I missing anything? Kind of VR game, in the real world, out on my bike linking stuff or doing whatever it is you do...

Sounds at least intriguing if not actual fun! So any of you doing it?

Abstract

Substituting bicycling for driving is frequently promoted as a means of reducing energy consumption and the associated degradation of the environment. This paper estimates the magnitude of this effect. The analysis takes account of the first-order effects due to the dramatically lower energy requirements of transportation by bicycle relative to automobiles. The environmental benefits of human power are, however, strongly coupled to the environmental costs of increased population, due to increased longevity of those who engage in physical activity. Paradoxically, increased use of human power for transportation is unlikely to reduce substantially the use of energy because of this second-order effect. Humanpowered transportation is therefore less an environmental issue and more an issue of public health. The interplay between longevity and environmental impact is a central feature of the conflicting societal objectives of improving human health and increasing environmental sustainability.
