I was given a #Zippo Handwarmer on Christmas day.

I was given a #Zippo Handwarmer on Christmas day. Not unusual to be given a gift, granted, but it is a slightly amazing thing...
Fill it with lighter fluid, according to the instructions, which basically means full to brimming for the first fill, then light.
On the box and in the instructions it claims "up to 12 hours" of hand warming.
32 (yes, thirty two) hours later IT'S STILL GOING! And it is working well, pleasingly warm all the time, almost too warm when trapped in a jeans pocket. It is bloody amazing, that's what it is! It's easy to see why the design of catalytic hand warmers hasn't really changed in nigh on a hundred years, they are simply brilliant as they are.
Now my only concern is whether it will go out before tomorrow so I can refill it for a walk. Hope I remember to not brim it next time I use it as well.
Already considering getting another for my other half as they are pretty cheap if you shop around...

  1. Never heard of the Zippo Handwarmer, sounds great if not slightly dangerous. Good practical gift.

  2. Dangerous Rick Horsfield ? It's only a little petrol canister you keep alight in your pocket... what could possibly go wrong! :-)
It seems that if the fuel food leak onto the catalytic burner it would actually put the burner out rather than light the fuel. It really is such a beautiful solution I can't believe I hadn't come across them before.
Oh, and we are now at 41 hours and it is still going!

  3. Yeah a friend uses one, loves it. I was thinking of getting my mom one because she suffers from cold hands.

  4. The only beginnings of a drawback I can think of is that it will need a new catalyst every 70-80 charges according to the instructions. Well, at less than 6 quid for one the running costs are still tiny compared to anything that lasts for more than half an hour. About tell I am a new, fully evangelistic fan :-)

  5. It's gone out... 42 hours after being lit... We'll done 1920's tech via Zippo.
