Anybody use MyTracks to record rides? It is a great application, or at least it was. It has started missing sections of track and I am hoping it is just my phone rather than MyTracks updating itself into a hole...

I used to. However, it didn't give me the detail that I got from several other apps like MapMyRide and Strava. Ultimately, I settled on Strava, but, there are a number of other apps.
ReplyDeleteIf you are losing GPS and you want to rule out MyTracks, try running it alongside Strava to see if one or the other also loses the track. Generally though, that means the phone lost GPS for a period of time which does happen to phones from time to time.
I e-mail the tracks to Strava from MyTracks for the best of both worlds, battery like and data. Pretty sure it wasn't the phone though, switched back to Strava in much worse conditions and it was fine. Can get a whole day ride on MyTracks and have battery to spare when Strava would kill it...
ReplyDeleteNo big sides planned to no great shakes, would like it back though :-)
MapMyRide pulses the GPS, i.e. on, get a fix, off... the problem is, sometimes when it turned on, it wouldn't get a fix and you would lose chunks of the ride. However, when I ran it alongside Strava, it was rock solid.
ReplyDeleteBattery life with Strava versus MapMyRide versus MyTracks when I tried it last May was similar, with a slight edge to MapMyRide, though, it often lost chunks of my ride as well.
I wonder if MyTracks has gone to less aggressive tracking which is why you get better battery life, but, it isn't getting a lock on the GPS every time.
Am wondering if the latest update has changed a default setting. So turned everything back to recording as much as possible and we will see what happens...
ReplyDeleteOk, an hours walking and sledging recorded perfectly after disabling "sharing-allow other applications access" and switching the sampling frequency back to maximum from "highest accuracy" fingers crossed...
ReplyDeletebryce hendrix accuracy was never a problem, it was just the missing swathes of track. Hopefully it was simply an odd combination of settings causing the problem.
ReplyDeleteI prefer endomondo. It uses a lot more battery though. I'm planning just getting a garmin 510 just because battery will last better and I'm not worried if I take a bad tumble that it'll shatter like my nexus
ReplyDeletebryce hendrix point taken :-) It didn't look however like the usual loss of sync/poor signal kind of thing. More like it simply didn't bother trying for ages, then get it, then drop it again. Could be coincidence that it happened a few times, or could be something else interfering. Just hoping that telling MyMaps to be less accommodating will solve it. On a sample of 1 track, it has ;-)
ReplyDeleteJohn Navarra make sure you post your next ride so we can send you some real-time encouragement. Love that coach thing they do :-)
ReplyDeletebryce hendrix I changed the location frequency (in recording settings) from "Adapt for accuracy" to "Smallest (recommended)". Will try and remember to toggle it back again and see if I can replicate the problem. Being an enthusiastic amateur I naturally changed two things rather than just one before testing though :-)
ReplyDeleteI had a problem with strava not obtaining a gps sugnal and had to reboot my phone whenever I wanted to ride. Ever since upgrading my phone I've had no issues.
