Hello, I think this is essentially a DM on Google+ as I have only included your name in the address to twin purposes.

Hello, I think this is essentially a DM on Google+ as I have only included your name in the address to twin purposes. Will check no-one else can see it (with wife's account) and also ask you a question. You recently got a wood burning stove? Can I ask why? It has just been in my head that it might be a practical alternative to burning ever more expensive gas (and something I have always wanted) and was wondering if you had done the maths and decided it was potentially cheaper or if you also just always wanted one, and so did it :-)
The ideal would of course to take the family on regular foraging trips into the local woods to collect dry fallen wood, the reality would undoubtably be buying stuff in but it would be an alternative to gas central heating not a total replacement.
Was just pondering and remembered you got one recently so thought I would be nosey :-)

Chris.

  1. We did quite a bit of research into which type of burner would be right for us but the last predicted gas price hike made it a no brainer. A friend of ours has had 2 fitted, he has a much bigger house than us, and he recons that both will pay for themselves in 2 winters but he did pay a lot more for his and had them fitted.

We fitted ours ourself, after some advice from a local fireplace shop (we bought our stove pipes from him). It was pretty easy, even for me (crap at DIY). We bought a couple of bags of decent logs, as recommended for the first few burns but after that we have found, foraged and been given wood for free.

I can dig out the details of the stove etc, ours is a multi fuel, I'm sure Amanda has all the details.

We love ours and try find any excuse to light it. We had it on last night and we had to open doors and windows to let some of the heat out. And the look great with the lights out :-)

  2. Oh no, that doesn't help at all, now I will have to live with my open fire lust even longer :-)
I think the dream involves a fire in the living room and a whole house heat recovery system for spreading it about and generally evening out the temperature. The little one's bedroom being furthest from where the fire would be doesn't make it a perfect solution on its own. Still most of our time is spent in the living room so we could have much much less time on the central heating...
Wonder if we have any spare cash to start saving with... and thanks for getting back in touch. You got anything to replace your race this weekend?
